Hazard Classification Overview

Canadian water authorities classify cross-connections as Severe, Moderate, or Minor based on what could contaminate your water supply and how serious that contamination would be. Severe-hazard connections require an RPZ. Moderate-hazard connections typically get a DCVA. Minor-hazard connections may use a PVB or SVB. The water authority makes the classification — not the property owner.

Restaurants & Food Service

Restaurants are among the most commonly regulated commercial property types for backflow prevention. Cross-connection risk sources include carbonated beverage dispensers (where CO₂-treated water can siphon back), commercial dishwasher connections, pre-rinse spray valves, ice maker water lines, and mop sink fill valves.

Most municipal water authorities in Canada classify food service operations as severe-hazard connections, requiring a Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) assembly on the main service connection. Annual certified testing and reporting is mandatory.

Medical & Dental Offices

Medical and dental offices are classified as severe-hazard premises under most municipal cross-connection control programs. Dental offices, in particular, present an acute risk: dental chair water lines can create a direct path between non-potable substances (saliva, blood, oral bacteria) and the potable water supply through back-siphonage.

Buildings with booster pump systems, in-suite water treatment, or commercial-grade amenities (pool, gym, food service) may require additional assembly coverage.

What happens if my property fails a backflow test?

If a backflow preventer fails a field test, it must be repaired or replaced before it can be returned to service. Some water authorities will issue a notice of non-compliance if a failed assembly is not repaired within the specified period.

How do I know what assembly type is required for my property?

Are there properties that do not require backflow prevention?

Commercial and institutional properties are virtually always required to have approved assemblies installed and tested.
